First stage is finished and what a week... Coming into the week I was feeling very good about my game as well as my putting. I had just came off a t4 finish at the eGolf Tour Championship. It was a great way to start the week.
Well just go ahead and throw all those thoughts out the window... The first round in Florence for the first stage was on Wednesday the 21st. I am not sure what changed but from the first hole I wasn't hitting it nearly as well or making any putts. I started the week with a pull hook driver to make an easy double bogey. I'm thinking to myself no big deal, long week, you can get it back. Short story it didn't come back and struggled the first and second day with my game as well as my mental approach to the game. Through two rounds I was sitting at +4 and the cut was looking like it might jump to -4 for the tournament.
Two days left and I was searching for something... I was starting to feel better about everything just because I did hit it well the second round just putted sooo bad!
The third round I went in knowing that I needed to start piecing together a tournament to get back to the cut line. I had two days to get the job done. The good news was that I had some experience from last year and knew the number that I had to get to. The third round was very similar to the first two in that I hit it well just couldn't get the ball in the hole... with three holes to play in the third round I was sitting only at even for the day. I hit it to 6 feet on the 16th hole. Walking to the green I came up with the idea to try something else with the putter. I switched my grip to the very unconventional "claw grip" and was able to make the putt and gave me some confidence! I ended up making 2 birdies on the last two holes to finish at -3 for the day and more importantly a fighting chance for tomorrow. I would use this new found putting style the rest of the week.
The last round began Sat morning with some stiff wind and a chance for rain. I was excited to see the weather change knowing that I could play well under those conditions and it would make the people around the cut line stress that much more, they had to deal with the Q school stress as well as the weather conditions. The final day was a good day for me. I started off making a birdie on my second hole, nearly made it from the fairway... always a good way to start. However, on my fourth hit a really bad tee shot and made double. Not good but I kept motivating myself and good things happened the rest of the day. I ended up with a 66 on the final day... starting the day I had 65 in my head but the weather was tough and the course played difficult.
So I posted -3 for the week and now all there was to do was wait and see if it was going to be good enough. I couldn't wait around and watch the scoreboard so I left and started driving! Places to go and I couldn't make the numbers on the board change so I would just let the scores come in and hope I was good enough!
I ended up making it on the number! Good enough... all I needed was to make it through and have somewhere to play for second stage. The journey goes on and there is lots of work to be done to get ready for the coming stages. I am going to get it together and it will be alright!
Thanks to everyone for all the motivation through texts and calls! It means a lot to me!
Keep checking back for updates and thanks for following!!!
